Keyways, hub grooves, multiple grooves, and square and hexagonal grooves for mechanical engineering and industry.
We can also slot blind-hole grooves.
Thanks to our additional capabilities in CNC turning, CNC milling, gear cutting, and grinding, we can combine groove machining with additional manufacturing steps depending on the workpiece.
Have Grooves Manufactured According to a Drawing
We manufacture grooves according to drawings and technical specifications and utilize a variety of manufacturing processes for this purpose.
Our capabilities include:
Therefore, you do not need to determine which manufacturing process is required before submitting your inquiry. Please send us the component drawing and the available technical specifications. We can then evaluate the manufacturing options based on this information.
Individual parts, small-batch production, and medium-sized production runs
Our manufacturing process is precisely tailored to these requirements. Among other things, we handle:
What types of grooves can we produce?
Keyways
Keyways are among the groove shapes we can machine according to technical specifications. If your component requires a specific keyway, please send us the complete drawing with the corresponding dimensions and tolerance specifications.
Hub Grooves
Hub grooves can also be produced using our manufacturing capabilities. Especially for hubs and other rotationally symmetric components, combining different machining steps can be beneficial. Depending on the workpiece, for example, turning followed by groove machining can be carried out within our production process.
Multiple Grooves
In addition to single grooves, we can also machine multiple grooves. For production inspection, the complete geometry as well as the position and arrangement of the individual grooves are critical.
Square and Hexagonal Grooves
Our range of services also includes the machining of square and hexagonal grooves. We use the respective drawing to determine whether a specific internal geometry can be manufactured using our processes.
Blind Grooves
Grooves that do not run through the entire workpiece present a special challenge. We are also capable of machining blind grooves. This allows us to machine components where the design does not permit a through-groove.
Do you have a special groove geometry?
Send us your drawing. We will assess manufacturability based on the specific component.
Cutting, pulling, or clearing grooves
Groove cutting
In groove cutting, the groove is created by a repeated linear tool movement. Among other things, this method also allows us to machine blind hole grooves. This makes grooving suitable for components where, due to their design, the groove cannot run all the way through the workpiece.
Groove cutting
For such components, we also have machines for groove cutting. Whether this process is used for your desired geometry depends on the technical requirements of the workpiece.
Groove broaching
Groove broaching is also among our machining capabilities. Instead of specifying a particular process, you can provide us with the requirements for the finished component. Based on the drawing, we can determine which of our available manufacturing methods is suitable.
Groove Machining as Part of the Complete Component Manufacturing Process
That is why, upon request, we consider not only the groove itself but also the other necessary machining steps for the workpiece.
In addition to groove machining, we offer capabilities for:
Instead of requesting several individual manufacturing steps separately, you can therefore send us the complete part drawing.
We determine which of the required processing steps can be combined within our manufacturing process.
Additional Surface and Heat Treatments
Depending on the component, we can also incorporate various downstream processes through our network of long-standing partners.
Grooves for Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Applications
Our manufacturing services are therefore aimed primarily at mechanical engineers, design engineers, procurement specialists, maintenance technicians, and other industrial clients.
Groove machining is of interest, for example, for:
Groove Machining with a High Degree of In-House Production
This allows us to address not only the groove but also—depending on your project—other requirements for the entire component.
Send us your drawing or CAD data and let us evaluate the manufacturing options for your component.
Quality Assurance in Groove Machining
Dittler GmbH’s quality management system is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015.
We have a physically separate measuring room for production and final inspection. There, we use, among other things, a 3-coordinate measuring machine from Zeiss to verify dimensional accuracy.
Measurement reports and initial sample inspection reports can also be generated according to relevant specifications.
This allows groove machining to be integrated into a controlled manufacturing process for the entire part as specified in the drawing.
From the Drawing to the Finished Groove
Please send us the technical drawing or any existing CAD data for your component.
2. Review the requirements
We examine the groove geometry, as well as the entire workpiece and the required machining steps.
3. Determine the manufacturing process
Depending on the technical requirements, we determine which of our processes is suitable for groove machining.
4. Edit component
Once the order has been placed, production proceeds in accordance with the agreed-upon specifications.
5. Check the quality

Frequently Asked Questions About Groove Machining
What types of grooves can Dittler produce?
With our groove butt-joining, groove broaching, and groove reaming machines, we can machine, among other things, keyways, multiple grooves, hub grooves, as well as square and hexagonal grooves. We verify the manufacturability of a specific geometry based on the drawing.
Can Dittler produce blind grooves?
Yes. We can machine blind grooves in-house. We will review the technical specifications to determine whether the specific groove geometry and the workpiece are suitable for this process.
What is the difference between grooving, slotting, and reaming?
These are different methods for producing grooves or corresponding internal geometries. Which of our methods is suitable for a specific component depends on its geometry and technical requirements.
Is it possible to manufacture individual components with a groove?
Yes. Our manufacturing process is designed for individual parts, small production runs, and medium-sized batches. This means you can also request custom parts based on drawings and special-order products.
Can Dittler perform other machining operations in addition to the groove?
